How many people is my dining table suitable for?

The question of the size of a dining table is probably the most important after the design.
Basically, one can say that a person needs about 60–80 cm of space at the dining table to sit comfortably. If the space is smaller, the situation at the table can become quite cramped.

Let's take an example of a rectangular dining table:

A dining table has the dimensions of 200 x 100 cm. Therefore, we have a total length of the dining table of 600 cm (2 x 200 cm + 2 x 100 cm).
On the long sides of the table, at least 3 people find sufficient space,... and at the two ends of the table, another 2 people.

How many people fit at a round dining table?

A round dining table has various advantages. It is somewhat space-saving and offers, unlike a rectangular table, a bit more space, as the entire outer edge can be used due to the round shape. With a rectangular table, the people sitting on the long edge have to move a bit towards the center so that the person at the head of the table can find space. Another positive factor is the communication-friendly nature of a round dining table. At a round dining table, you sit opposite several people at the same time, which greatly facilitates fluid conversation.

The dining table „Expression“, an example of a dining table for up to 10 people

A fabulous example of a dining table for 10 people is the EXPRESSION from GERKEN Wohndesign. With its diameter of over 200 cm, it offers enough space for 8–10 people,… and it is also a real eye-catcher.
The tabletop of this dining table is made from a single tree slice of Suar. Additionally, it is a shallow-rooted tree, which allows us to access a tree slice that is many times larger than the trunk itself, already one meter below the surface. Another great side effect is the grain of the wood when it comes from the area of the tree root. In the countries of origin, the wood of Suar is usually only used as packaging wood. For furniture construction, the wood is not suitable due to its very coarse fiber structure and is therefore often used for charcoal production. For Suar, a thickness of at least 5 cm is required to obtain a structurally strong and crack-free slab. For us and for the topic of sustainability, it is important that Suar is a cultivated fruit tree and does not belong to protected tree species. Of course, the raw material for this tabletop is certified and has been controlled by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food.

It is not only important how many people can fit at a table, the shape of a table also plays a big role

For comfortable seating at the dining table, an area of about 60 – 80 cm in width and 40 cm in depth should be planned per person. This way, everyone has enough space to eat and move their arms. For chairs with armrests or particularly wide seats, more space may be required. The distance to the wall should also be at least 80 cm to be able to stand up comfortably.

Advantages of a round table
Round tables promote communication, as all guests can look directly at each other. They are ideal for smaller groups and create a sociable atmosphere. Additionally, they have no corners, which is advantageous in small rooms.
