Coffee table made from a solid tree root

This legendary coffee table made from a solid tree root is a root of the lychee tree (Litchi). The special feature is the extraordinary width of 209 cm and a depth of 153 cm. We are only extremely rarely fortunate enough to purchase such large tree roots, as the roots are usually cut into smaller, more transportable formats right after being extracted from the ground. However, it would be a pure waste to create several smaller coffee tables from this giant tree root. After the rough cutting, the tree root was cleaned by hand, finely sanded, and then gently dried in a drying oven. After drying, the tree root was once again finely sanded and lacquered by hand for this coffee table. The corresponding glass top was specially made by a glazier in the shape of the tree root. Together, these natural components create a coffee table like the world has surely never seen before.

Each coffee table made from a solid tree root by „GERKEN Wohndesign“ is produced by family businesses we personally know in Java. For this purpose, we travel to Indonesia 6–7 times a year to support the manufacturing processes and quality assurance,... furthermore, it is extremely important that we supervise the procurement of raw materials in Indonesia to ensure the continuous sustainability of our products.
Since this coffee table is made from reclaimed wood that has been lying in the backyard of one of our producers for five years, the wood is already very well seasoned. To eliminate the residual moisture, which is always present in the wood due to the humid weather, the moisture content was first measured to calculate the time needed for drying in the drying oven. After complete drying, the wood for the coffee table is sanded and lacquered by hand. To ensure a durable surface, the producers only apply a single protective layer of clear lacquer to the coffee table. Only after arriving in Germany is the wood sanded again and lacquered with furniture lacquer from a German brand.
