Coffee table tree trunk from the area of the tree root

This fabulously rare coffee table is made from a tree slice from the area of the tree root from Suar, which is often offered under the trade name acacia. The special feature is the hollow interior of the tree trunk, which has been sanded by hand.
With its extraordinary width of 209 cm and depth of 153 cm, this coffee table is certainly not suitable for every living room. However, it would be a sheer waste to create several smaller coffee tables from this magnificent piece. After cutting, the tree slice was cleaned by hand, finely sanded, and then gently dried in a drying oven over a period of 5 weeks. After the drying process, the tree slice was sanded again and lacquered for this coffee table. The glass top was custom-made by a glazier in the shape of the tree slice. Together, these natural components create a living room table like the world has surely never seen before.

Every piece of furniture from „GERKEN Wohndesign“ is made by family businesses we personally know in Java. For this purpose, we now travel to Indonesia 6 to 7 times a year to support the processes in manufacturing and quality assurance,... moreover, it is extremely important that we supervise the procurement of raw materials ourselves in Indonesia, as otherwise, the origin of the goods would have to be questioned.
Since this coffee table is made from wood from a tree that was felled years ago, the wood is already very well seasoned. To eliminate the residual moisture, which is always present in the wood due to the humid weather, the moisture content was first measured to calculate the time needed for drying in the drying oven. After complete drying, the wood for the coffee table is sanded and lacquered by hand. To ensure a durable surface, the producers only apply a single protective layer of clear lacquer to the coffee table. Only after arriving in Germany is the wood sanded again and lacquered with furniture lacquer from a German brand.
