What is actually the right height for a coffee table?

The simplest rule of thumb from our everyday life: A coffee table should be about as high as the seat height of your sofa. Usually, the seat height of a couch is around 40 to 48 cm. If you have a low couch, the coffee table can also be a bit lower,... this often looks a bit more elegant. If you prefer practicality, for example because you often eat at your coffee table or work with your laptop, the table can also be a bit higher. The optimal height of a coffee table is thus about 2–5 cm lower or higher than the seat of the couch.

How long and wide should a coffee table be?

The optimal width of a coffee table mainly depends on the size of the sofa and the room. Logically,... a wide couch can also accommodate a wide coffee table well. A too small coffee table would visually disappear, while a too large coffee table could cover parts of the couch or block pathways. There is no one-size-fits-all solution here, but we have a few experiences that we would like to share with you:

Typical dimensions for rectangular coffee tables:

The depth (i.e., the width of the coffee table) is usually between 70 and 100 cm and is influenced by two essential factors.

Round coffee tables often fit better visually in smaller rooms or with sofas that stand open in the room. From our experience, customers usually choose a diameter between 70 and 100 cm here. Another advantage of a round coffee table is its child-friendliness. Round coffee tables have no sharp corners where a child could get hurt,… and of course, our shins are also somewhat protected.
