The Coffee table made from a tree root ROOTS is a simple table, it is a piece of furniture made from a sustainable root with an equally sustainable story. This tree root comes from reforestation areas on the Indonesian islands Java and Bali and tells its own story of sustainability, traditional craftsmanship, and the recovery of valuable natural materials.

An old tree root :: A sustainable raw material for dreamy furniture

The Tree root, from which the Coffee table ROOTS was made, comes from teak trees that were cut down 30 to 50 years ago to obtain wood for folding chairs and garden tables. Back then, the tree stumps and roots were simply left in the ground, which can undoubtedly be considered as exploitation of nature. Those irresponsible times are over. Today, these abandoned tree roots are removed from the ground to make way for new plants and a healthy fauna.

Traditional processing and modern design

The basic shapes for the living room table ROOTS are created in pure handwork in small family businesses on the island of Java. Once the living room tables arrive with us, our carpenters refine the material in our in-house workshop into distinctive furniture.

  • Drying and sanding: The tree root is carefully dried and then hand-sanded to preserve and highlight the natural structure.
  • Sealing: After processing, the root is sealed with a high-quality furniture wax to make it durable and easy to care for.
  • Glass plate: A 10 mm thick glass top rests on the Tree root and not only provides a practical surface but also allows a glimpse into the fascinating structure of the root.
