Reclaimed wood is durable and sustainable

Unfortunately, sustainability is a topic that is neglected by many furniture manufacturers. For most furniture, trees are cut down to then process the wood into sawdust, which is ultimately pressed into shape and coated with plastic. Anyone who still speaks of craftsmanship at this point has not understood the word furniture carpenter. There is nothing exciting about such furniture,... boring surfaces without the possibility of discovering something about the origin of the wood.
Dining tables from GERKEN Wohndesign are different. We manufacture our furniture almost 100% from reclaimed wood in combination with natural, recyclable materials such as raw steel, stainless steel, and glass. The reclaimed wood used comes from old demolished houses on the islands of Java and Bali. The wood has already completed a lifespan of about 50–70 years and is now getting a new use as a dining table. Traces of previous use, such as nail holes, notches, and saw cuts, are not hidden but painstakingly worked on to preserve the old character of the reclaimed wood. Every dining table from our house could tell stories,... that is an exciting piece of furniture.
