This compact coffee table from the series „Lakeside“ was handcrafted from a tree slice (teak root trunk). The natural growths occurring in the root trunk were visually highlighted by stylishly designed glass inlays. Thus, the design created by nature is fully preserved, and every glance at this small coffee table allows for a new perspective.
The coffee table stands on three V-shaped table legs made of brushed stainless steel, which, like every other component, were crafted in pure and artistic handwork.

Coffee tables from GERKEN Wohndesign, where sustainability begins!

Especially in today's time, we encounter the term sustainability almost daily. But what does sustainability mean in relation to our furniture?
The small coffee table presented here is made from reclaimed wood. The tree slice comes from the reforestation areas of the islands of Java and Bali. Since teak wood is a very durable wood and takes many decades to rot in the ground, the tree roots are removed from the ground and sent for recycling before new trees are planted in the same place. However, it is unfortunate that the wood obtained is not suitable for industrial use because it has natural growths. Therefore, this wood is usually processed into charcoal in smaller businesses, which in turn releases a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Our work begins precisely at this point. We purchase reclaimed wood and debris wood in large quantities from these mentioned businesses and craft furniture from this beautiful material by hand,… including this small coffee table. Our thought process thus starts where others are already thinking of „burning.“ Every table from our company saves the climate, as every cubic meter of burned wood generates one ton (1000 kg) of carbon dioxide.
Each individual table and dining table from our company is produced in collaboration with small family businesses from the islands of Java and Bali. Each table has its own personal touch and design.
