Tree root coffee tables: Handmade

When our management Olaf and Lena Gerken discovered years ago that the tree roots from trees in Indonesia are simply burned, the idea arose to give the wood a second life. Our partner companies in Indonesia procure for us the Root wood, which would otherwise be burned or disposed of. They then dry the wood in a specially designed oven after it has been cut into a suitable shape. The outward-facing cut edge is then finely sanded and subjected to a finishing process. Now nothing stands in the way of transport to Germany, where the wood is loaded and a final refinement takes place with a glass plate specially designed for the table.

Coffee table Roots

The extraordinary coffee table „Roots“ is carved by hand from an old tree root (Teak wood). Since each tree root and each tree stump has different shapes, each coffee table from the series „Roots“ is a unique piece. The tree roots come from reforestation areas of the island of Java in Indonesia, where today the remnants of the former irresponsible deforestation of the forests are being removed from the ground to make way for a new forest area. Unfortunately, this beautiful material is often processed into firewood and charcoal, but there is hope. 7. The coffee table „Leaf“ is a mix of tree root- and Log table, as we use the tree stump that represents the connection between trunk and root. There are our tree root solid wood tables, both in teak wood and in suar wood. Our partners in Indonesia carve, sand, and lacquer the tree stump entirely by hand. The extraordinary shape of the tree stumps gives us the unique opportunity to replicate the structure of leaves. As a result, the tables are not only a piece of furniture but also an art object. The surface of the coffee tables is additionally fitted with a glass top that follows the natural shape of the tree trunk.
