What makes a table from GERKEN Wohndesign so unique?
Craftsmanship, unique raw materials, and an incomparable design characterize a special table. The dining table EXPRESSION definitely belongs to this category. For the EXPRESSION table, tree slices from old tree stumps (teak root wood) are glued together by hand. The individual tree slices are sorted by hand and shaped into the tabletop. The use of wood from the root area creates a unique grain that enhances the appearance of the table.

Unique tables from GERKEN Wohndesign and the topic of sustainability
We place the utmost importance on the sustainability of all materials used. Our tables are exclusively made from recycled wood, reclaimed wood from old tree stumps, and wood from old fruit trees. We see no reason to use freshly cut wood for the design of our dining tables and coffee tables,… we believe that unique tables consist of unique raw materials,… and that can certainly be recycled wood and reclaimed wood.
The dining table EXPRESSION also follows the path of sustainability at this point. The wood comes, as already described, from old tree stumps and tree roots. These tree stumps are a testament to the earlier clearings when the Western world represented a market for garden furniture made of teak wood. The trees irresponsibly felled decades ago left an immeasurable number of tree stumps and roots in the ground. Since Teak wood it is quite oily, the stumps hardly decay. The roots are now being removed from the ground to make room for a new forest.
We regularly travel to the mentioned areas on the island of Java in Indonesia and purchase quantities of these tree stumps to create unique tables and other furniture from the resulting tree slices.
